A friend of mine who once worked as a security guard for El Al at a German airport told me the following story, about an incident which she witnessed. It happened, I believe, in the early 1990s.
A large group of German priests were on their way from Germany to Israel for a pilgrimage to the holy sites. With the exception of their group leader, also a priest, none of them spoke English. Since there was only one El Al security officer who spoke German, the wait to go through the security check was very long. The group leader broke out of the queue and approached one of the El Al staff.
The priest was angry and impatient. He complained about the long wait. He asked why El Al didn't try harder to recruit German-speaking Israelis to work for the airline in German airports. Surely it couldn't be so difficult to find a few more Israelis who speak German, now could it?
The Israeli security officer looked at the German priest and said, "What do you want? You burned them all."
