Excellent! :)
Re: A piece of peace graffiti
What's kind of awesome is that seeing the word, between the two blue bars as though on an Israeli flag, I realized that I could more-or-less make it out.
I've always wanted to learn Arabic someday, once I've actually mastered Hebrew. So it makes me irrationally pleased that the word in that graffiti was recognizable to me as "salaam." :-) Re: A piece of peace graffiti

Lisa,
What is the grafitti on top of the flag, this is cut off in the picture? Just curious. Re: Re: A piece of peace graffiti
I don't remember, actually. I think it was the signature of another graffiti artist.

I'd be curious to know who tagged that one... (probably, but surely not necessarily an israeli arab.. but whom? How old? A man, a woman?).
I think it's quite endearing! While I felt the drawing was a little self-contradictory at first, I guess this yearning to peace in one's home is so basic, so necessary, so universal, that it no longer matters in which colour or language it is written... Thank you for the smile. There is light after all. ;) Re: Re: A piece of peace graffiti
Hi Mohamed -
I'm glad I made you smile:) Lately a lot of graffiti artists have been popping up in the Florentine neighbourhood. I'm pretty sure the one who did the peace flag is not an Israeli Arab, but I'll see if I can find out for sure. Re: Re: Re: A piece of peace graffiti

For the Poet_____
peace resides in the heart ______war in the mind. Re: A piece of peace graffiti
Good art (including street art) raises questions, doesn't answer them. The first question one tends to ask is, "what is the artist trying to say?" A more useful question would be, "what do I see?" In this case, I see an Israeli flag without a Jewish star. In its place is the word salaam in Arabic. My paranoid, Jewish reaction is: Israel will be at peace when it is without Jews and Arabs can finally live there in peace. Perhaps that is what the artist meant? I cannot be sure what he/she meant (if anything), but I can be sure of my reaction: fear and distrust. If I ever had a chance to talk to the artist I would love to see how he/she responds to my response. I am working on Israeli Palestinian reconciliation here from my safe home in the US, and I have learned that many of my assumptions, especially those based on fear, are often unreliable as measurements of reality. Is this another example or is my paranoia justified?
