in Germany "sufganyot" are called "Berliner" ( filled with marmelade ) and we do eat them at New Year's Eve a lot ( 31.12.). You'll have to pre-order at the bakery if you want them for the celebrations, and usually it's the only itme bakery's have on sale that day ( they are baking them the whole night before ).
Here in Switzerland they are also called Berliner or "Boules de Berlin", but the swiss people don't have this New Year's tradition.
Maybe one of the rare things i miss about german traditions here...

just think of this, in USA the christians are already preparing for Christmas eventhough its 4 weeks away, why cant we?
it just gets you in the mood for chanukah (the holidays).
also think of it just like the humantashins you make it for a few weeks and everyone wants it, the day after Purim no one wants it.
its the same thing.

Nobody wants hamentaschen after Purim? Speak for yourself; I'd eat them on any day of the year, if only I could get them. Grand Bakery, the local kosher operation in Oakland, CA does apricot as well as prune and poppy.

I assume that Canada is like the US, where jelly doughnuts (usually with a bright-red raspberryesque filling) are available in every doughnut shop in the country, all day, every day?
