Brothers and sisters, as I sit here in this great city of Tel Aviv, home of air conditioned cafes with free WiFi and excellent espresso, I am contemplating what I plan to write about Gaza (gah!). And brothers and sisters, I have a dream. I dream that one day it will be possible to have a rational conversation about the Middle East. Yes, I have a dream today.
Can I get an "amen" ? (please?)
Dedicated to Sam Adams (aka Egyptian Sandmonkey).
Update: Someone left a long anonymous comment that was clearly meant to provoke, in the most negative sense of the word. I decided against posting it, which is something I have only done twice since introducing comment moderation. My reasons are mostly covered in the rules for commenting. Also, I'm just not in the mood for mean-spirited comments. They make me feel as though someone spit on the food I cooked.

Amen Sistah. I can hear "R-E-S-P-E-C-T" playing in my head. The one vaule the people of this world need to start practicing is respect- respect for others despite the differences.

AMEN!
Re: With apologies to Martin Luther King, Jr. (Z''L)
How can one hope for a rational conversation about a conflict that is in its essence a religious one, religion being so irrational? Show me one religious conflict that was solved by rational debate and I'll give you your dream. Frankly, it's like hoping for hell to freeze over.
Didn't mean to rain on your parade, so please keep on dreaming! Amen. Re: With apologies to Martin Luther King, Jr. (Z''L)
Amen v'amen!!!

Hey, I think when you and I talk about the Middle East, we're pretty rational.
Maybe that's because we agree on most things. Still, dreams CAN come true, see? :-) Are you coming on Shabbat? Re: With apologies to Martin Luther King, Jr. (Z''L)

Not really related - but that was a funny quote:
"I'd rather be riding my motorcycle thinking about God than sitting in church thinking about my motorcycle" Re: With apologies to Martin Luther King, Jr. (Z''L)
You may just have to be satisfied with the air-conditioning (until the brown-outs begin again...), the free wi-fi and the excellent espresso. I definitely share in that dream, though, it often just makes me sad to think about, since I wonder if it will ever really happen. I'll be happy to discuss it with you over excellent espresso. :-)

(First, long sigh out . . . then, in a very small voice) Amen. Actually that "amen" is more like "Inshallah", since everyone in the Middle East has an *amazingly* long memory. (Don't believe me? Ask the Kurds, the Armenians and any number of other minorities.)
