So an American couple gets hungry during a long day of shopping and darbuka drumming in Jerusalem's Old City. Instead of making the obligatory stop at Abu Shukri for hummus-chips-salad-pita-falafel-who-cares-about-the-calories-we're-on-vacation meal, they run over to a taxi driver and ask him where they can get a real "local" salad.
That is the silly-but-kinda-funny premise for the most recent McDonald's advertisement on Israeli television. Brought to you courtesy of Youtube. The punchline will make you smile, as long as you know your Middle Eastern foods.

Snort. Not bad at all.

Really, there must be some limits to McCriminal activity! Turned me stomach.

Haha. For real though, how does it taste? Re: Re: Number 57, how do you say McDonald's in English?

For real, I have no idea. I'm a total food snob - haven't darkened the door of an American fast food joint since I was, like, a teenager.

I laughed out loud at both that and "Eich omrim McDonalds b'anglit?". Not bad for 50 seconds. It's cast very well. Re: Number 57, how do you say McDonald's in English?

True Story -
Israeli born and bred Sister in Law, here in the States, asked to get a salad from McDonalds. I tried to talk her out of it but she insisted. Boy was she surprised. Re: Re: Number 57, how do you say McDonald's in English?
Oh man, I bet she was surprised. Reminds me of an incident that occurred during the brief and horrible time I waitressed at a Greek diner in Manhattan: one day an Israeli couple, clearly on their first trip abroad, walked in and ordered breakfast. They nearly threw up when they received two plates of hash browns, bacon, greasy fried eggs and soggy, tasteless toasted bread. "Eyfo ha-salat?!" they wanted to know.

Aside from the fact that Marrouch rules, and AbouSkun comes nowhere near him, I have just a question; why would they use a "December meets June" couple? This is not your typical american couple.
... And they're fit. Re: Re: Number 57, how do you say McDonald's in English?
True, they're definitely not a typical American couple. But I don't think the average Israeli could relate to Mr. and Mrs. Supersize Me. Also, fat people would probably be more interested in a Big Mac than a salad - which would kinda ruin the premise... ;)
Re: Re: Re: Number 57, how do you say McDonald's in English?
Lisa,
Do you think they're supposed to be Jewish? I think in America they would be "recognized" as WASP (I know someone is going to ask me about those quotation marks - I used them because, in reality, there obviously are Jews who look like that couple). But in Israel, American Jews are often parsed simply as Americans, not necessarily Jewish. Maybe I'm wrong about that... Re: Number 57, how do you say McDonald's in English?

funny - i also like the 'eich omrim' line.
i think it is interesting that mcdonalds is trying to play to the local taste (complete with techina) and not just import the american product. Trackbacks
