Re: How Lisa came to Israel (part six)
by Homo Ludens
Hallo Lisa, having read the whole series today, I'm very impressed by your ability to catch the atmosphere of those days vividly and displaying analytical distance at once. I want to thank you for letting me empathize with you and, presumably, a larger part of Israelian society during that period. But there also is a major irritation because of one word in the following paragraph:
That night Eran said that any other country would have sent the air force in and flattened Jenin, instead of risking soldiers' lives with house-to-house searches in the narrow, crowded streets where Palestinian gunmen shot Israeli soldiers from the low roofs. He wasn't the only person who made that observation, but I was too tired to argue about morality. Normal people say extreme things during times of stress.
I mean the word "observation", by which you seemingly confirm the judgement about other nations and thereby deny their morality. I doubt that the Italians, the Canadians or the Dutch would have "flattened Jenin" or only "would have sent the airforce in". Do you really think they would have done so?
