Re: My Zionist Hero
by
Yael
A little bit of history about zionism that a lot of people don't seem to know: Zionism was by and large a secular movement historically. It was fervantly opposed by the Hasidim prior to the Second World War and the more orthodox movements vociferously opposed the establishment of the State of Israel right up to the day of the vote. Following the U.N. decision there was grudging acceptance. It is only in the past couple of decades that the form of "religious zionism" we see today came about and now people seem to assume that if you are a Zionist you must be religious and pretty religious at that. The pioneers who built this country, particularly those in the 1920s and 30s hailed largely from secular zionist movements such as Poalei Tzion (Labor Zionists), and Hitachdot (Union Zionists), and from the communist-leaning zionist groups such as The Bund and so forth. There was also a "religious zionist" group, made up of those who were observant but not as observant as the hasidim --but it was much smaller in comparison to, for instance, the Labor and Union groups. There were a bunch of different sub-groups under the banner of Zionism.
