Re: My Zionist Hero
by

Sometimes it is better to answer with a story than an explanation. I really enjoy this story. Although it's difficult for me to understand Zionism, Ilan's example is the way I could see a promise land building itself -with a sensitivity to all different viewpoints, and a tolerance for different solutions to the issues that divide people and cause friction between them. I think that a culture of acceptance is one that will gain the most support, and attract the right values to unite each other. The differences between religious and secular Zionism seem to be ideology vs. action, and the examples you gave of your friends who volunteer to me show what it really means to build a sense of community -not a culture of elitism. It should not be a culture of superiority as Karkover suggests with his description of his children as the "best", but one of tolerance and belonging, as is exemplified in Ilan -someone who was a wanderer, who purused his dreams and found a home in Tel Aviv.
