Re: Trois Couleurs: Tel Aviv
by Joanne
Lisa, I recently finished a book called The Other War: Israelis, Palestinians and the Struggle for Media Supremacy. It's by journalist Stephanie Gutmann. I would love to have your take on the book if you could ever find the time to look through it. The Other War is extremely well written, a quick and interesting read. The book is a fascinating, and ultimately depressing, account of how Israel is losing the media war. The author's main point is that many journalists, whether out of ideological predilection or practical necessity, depend on Palestinian fixers in the West Bank who end up determining what these journalists see and report. She also reports the almost universal disdain for Israel among journalists, who often love to brag about run-ins with the IDF over drinks at the American Colony Hotel. She also goes into depth about what she sees as the obtuseness and incompetency of Israeli government spokesmen. It's a very affecting book, a real eye-opener. I found it hard to put down. But I have no way of knowing how much of it may be oversimplified and how much of it is dead-on accurate. Some day, if you have a spare weekend, please read it. It's easily gettable on Amazon if, for some reason, you can't get it in Israel (although it's probably available all over the place there). Then please give your opinions of the book. As I said, I'd love to hear them. I found the book very compelling, but you're in a far better position to give an informed opinion, given that you're a journalist in Israel and ideologically neutral enough to judge it fairly.
