Re: State and Homeland
by Anonymous
Very good article! I wish more people understood the difference between historical Israel and the very current geopolitical reality. I have one qualm with the piece, which is that he ignores two important points: a) The Palestinian state is unlikely to grant Israelis access over the border. We're not talking about Jordan, but a new and different entity entirely. And so the "convergence" will, in essence, mean that Jews will be denied access to our holy places - probably for a very long time. b) It is quite likely that once they are no longer protected, many of our holy/historical places will be utterly destroyed, as Joseph's Tomb was. So, while I agree with the article in philosophy, there are other "issues of the NOW" that the article glaringly ignores. If I knew for sure that our holy places would be protected, and that we'd have access to them, I'd support convergence almost completely. I don't need Israel to have control over every bit of land that was ever part of Biblical Israel, but I do need to know that I could visit those places of religious and historical significance to me. Or that, at the VERY LEAST, those places would be respected and cared for. Ay, there's the rub.
