It depends on the file format of your video file. Not knowing what it is, guessing either DV or AVI (uncompressed) I would checkout videohelp.com. Specifically http://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=244151 (How to convert DV to DivX or XviD using Virtualdub) or http://www.videohelp.com/avi2divx.htm (How to convert to DivX/AVI with Virtualdub).
