Re: A piece of peace graffiti
by dsokal
Good art (including street art) raises questions, doesn't answer them. The first question one tends to ask is, "what is the artist trying to say?" A more useful question would be, "what do I see?" In this case, I see an Israeli flag without a Jewish star. In its place is the word salaam in Arabic. My paranoid, Jewish reaction is: Israel will be at peace when it is without Jews and Arabs can finally live there in peace. Perhaps that is what the artist meant? I cannot be sure what he/she meant (if anything), but I can be sure of my reaction: fear and distrust. If I ever had a chance to talk to the artist I would love to see how he/she responds to my response. I am working on Israeli Palestinian reconciliation here from my safe home in the US, and I have learned that many of my assumptions, especially those based on fear, are often unreliable as measurements of reality. Is this another example or is my paranoia justified? Salaam/Shalom
