Hi Lisa,
in Germany "sufganyot" are called "Berliner" ( filled with marmelade ) and we do eat them at New Year's Eve a lot ( 31.12.). You'll have to pre-order at the bakery if you want them for the celebrations, and usually it's the only itme bakery's have on sale that day ( they are baking them the whole night before ).
Here in Switzerland they are also called Berliner or "Boules de Berlin", but the swiss people don't have this New Year's tradition.
Maybe one of the rare things i miss about german traditions here...
